03 Two ways to cope with climate change

Mitigate climate change. Adapt to climate change. That is how we safeguard our future.

Relying solely on mitigation measures to eliminate the causes of climate change will not be enough.

Global warming attributed to industrial development has also led to various damages around the world. For example, rapid damage includes flooding and high waves, and then there's gradual damage such as rising sea levels and desertification. In order to prevent this, many initiatives are being undertaken worldwide, including the use of renewable energy and reforestation. These climate change mitigation measures are designed to minimize the causes of climate change and prevent further warming from occurring.

It goes without saying that these are crucial initiatives. For those of us who wish to live on Earth as it continues to get hotter, however, mitigation measures alone will not suffice. It is also important to prevent, or eliminate, climate changes as well as disasters and damages that are occurring now or may occur in the future.

We must also think about
how we can prevent
the damage caused
by climate change.

We also need to implement adaptation measures to prepare for the impact of climate change.

It is vitally important for our future that we work to mitigate climate change in order to prevent further warming from occurring. Yet, that alone will not be enough. This is because, since climate change is already underway, we cannot prevent climate change from causing damage and major disasters through efforts aimed solely at mitigation.

It is also important to figure out how we can face and prepare for any climate change-related damage that will continue to unfold. In other words, it is also exceedingly important to figure out how we can flexibly adapt to a global environment that is altering due to climate change.

Mitigate climate change. Adapt to climate change. Both approaches are indispensable for climate change measures that constitute an important challenge for us.

Mitigate and adapt.
To address the crucial
challenge of
climate change,
both measures
are indispensable.
